Cleansing means different things to different people. I used the word cleanse interchangeably with detox and reset. It’s not just physically cleaning off the dirt and dust, scraping off the gunk, and getting rid of unwanted things. It’s clearing the mind, reevaluating what’s wrong and what’s not, what needs to be fixed or replaced. My teeth look and feel like they’re healthy, but I’m still going to go to my bi-annual cleaning. I do the same thing for the rest of my body, too. I’m healthy, and I want to stay that way. I’m not perfect. My house isn’t always clean. I don’t always choose the healthiest foods. My hair products could be cleaner, same for my dishwashing detergent. I’m exposed to fumes in traffic. I eat the cake when offered, most times, if it’s gluten free, of course. I skip my workouts. I get stressed out and hold grudges instead of letting things go, and I have trouble sleeping after stressful events or a late night “treat.”
For some people, a Cleanse or Detox is stopping something for a short time. Removing stressors, fasting from electronics, having a stay-home day, or saying, “No” to a bunch of work. For some people, a cleanse or detox can be switching to a whole foods diet for a few days (hopefully forever, LOL!), taking a break from animal foods, or taking a few days to off alone somewhere.
I use a cleanse to reset my eating habits and to get my mind back on track, too. When I do a deep cleanse, I don’t have to plan and prep my meals so much, so it gives me more time to focus on me. Am I holding on to something? I tune into my feelings. I nourish my body and mind. I look at what is holding me back. What am I allowing to clutter my physical space and my mind? What no longer serves me? I give my body a break by using gentle exercises and blended meals and juices. This allows my body to use energy to make repairs. A cleanse is my personal healing journey.
This spring I encourage you to take time out for your health. Find a cleanse, reset, or detox that fits YOU. Take a time-out and think about what is no longer serving you. What can you let go of? What can you change to improve your health for a few days, for this season, or for even longer.
You can do this alone, or you can find a coach or group that can work through this with you.
