If you’re dealing with autoimmune thyroid disease, you know that the struggle can often feel invisible, leaving you feeling isolated, frustrated, and powerless. It doesn’t matter if it’s Hashimoto’s, Graves’, or another autoimmune thyroid condition, your body can feel like it’s betraying you. The fatigue, unexplained weight gain, digestive issues, anxiety, and brain fog can create an exhausting cycle. You go from doctor to doctor, seeking answers, but often find that the “solutions” don’t help—prescriptions, surgery, or even radiative iodine that change things without addressing the root causes of the disease.
But here’s the truth: You do have power over your health. Your body is capable of healing, but it needs the right tools, support, and a plan. Autoimmune thyroid disease doesn’t have to take over your life. Small changes, self-care, and support can give you control over your health again. It all starts with nourishing your body, mind, and soul.
The Silent Struggles of Autoimmune Thyroid Disease
When you’re diagnosed with an autoimmune thyroid disease, it can feel really scary. I left the doctor’s office with more questions than answers. Why is the body under attack? Your immune system—meant to protect you—becomes confused and starts attacking the thyroid. This can lead to either an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) or an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), both of which disrupt hormones and everything from metabolism to mood.

The Physical and Emotional Roller Coaster
The symptoms of autoimmune thyroid disease can be really vague and affect many areas of your life. And because these symptoms can fluctuate, it often feels like you’re on an emotional and physical rollercoaster, with no clear answers or relief in sight. I just thought it was a part of my personality to be moody and anxious all the time.
Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) often leads to a slower metabolism leading to weight gain, sluggish energy, sluggish bowels, and difficulty staying awake throughout the day. Your body’s ability to burn calories and regulate hormones gets disrupted, leaving you feeling cold, constipated, and mentally foggy.
Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) speeds up the metabolism, causing symptoms like anxiety, rapid heart rate, unintentional weight loss, and a constant feeling of being on edge. For me I was always cold, and I couldn’t sweat. If I ran or biked in the summer it would take me HOURS to cool off. My face would be beet red and very dry hours later.
Whether you’re experiencing one or the other—or fluctuating between the two—it’s easy to feel out of control.
The medical system doesn’t address the underlying issues.
Patients, you and I, are frustrated and left searching for answers. Many doctors treat only the symptoms with prescriptions and medications that manage the condition on a surface level but rarely get to the heart of the problem. This can leave you feeling helpless and exhausted.
I was told I had to have surgery, and after 6 years in and out of remission, my doctor told me I would die if I didn’t do the radiation. Removing or killing the thyroid isn’t a cure, and it doesn’t fix anything. You’re left needing meds and regular blood work for the rest of your life, stuck to the medical system. Without “curing” the autoimmune disease, you still have autoimmune disease, just a different one. Listen to my story.
This is where you have the power to shift things. Instead of relying solely on the system that may not solve everything, you can take action in ways that will not only support your thyroid but will help restore balance in your entire system. By focusing on whole-body health, you can start to see profound improvements.
What You Can Do to Support Your Body and Heal
Create a plan that focuses on lifestyle choices that truly nourish and heal. While there is no magic pill for autoimmune thyroid disease, there are simple yet powerful changes you can make to feel better and regain your energy.

Nourish Your Body with Whole, Plant-Based Foods
The foods you eat are the building blocks of your health. You are what you eat!
When it comes to autoimmune thyroid disease, eating an anti-inflammatory, nutrient-dense diet is key. The goal is to reduce inflammation, support your immune system, and add nutrients your body needs, vitamins and minerals it needs to thrive.
A whole food, plant-based diet can help reduce the chronic inflammation, while also giving your thyroid the support it needs. By focusing on anti-inflammatory foods, you can reduce the stress placed on your thyroid and improve the way your body responds to hormones.
Here are a few dietary changes that can make a significant impact:
- Ditch Gluten and Dairy: Gluten and dairy are inflammatory triggers. Cutting these out can help reduce inflammation and give your thyroid a much-needed break. The proteins in gluten and dairy resemble the thyroid proteins, and the immune system has been signaled to attack those proteins. Stop adding them to your body, so your immune system can get a break. We make eating gluten free easy.
- Incorporate Antioxidant-Rich Foods: Foods like berries, leafy greens, and cruciferous vegetables (like broccoli and kale) are packed with antioxidants that help protect your thyroid and combat oxidative stress. Eat the rainbow. Try to get all of the colors into your body every day. Each color adds a different antioxidant and different vitamins and minerals.
- Eat More Omega-3s: Omega-3 fatty acids are known for their anti-inflammatory properties. You can find these in plant-based sources like flaxseeds, chia seeds, hemp seeds, and walnuts. Omega-3s help balance the immune system and promote healing.
- Support Your Gut: Your gut and thyroid are closely connected, and a healthy microbiome is crucial for managing autoimmune diseases. Probiotic-rich foods, like fermented vegetables (sauerkraut, kimchi), and fiber-rich foods (fruits, vegetables, sprouted beans, nuts, and seeds) can promote a healthy gut and reduce inflammation.

Exercise to Boost Energy and Restore Balance
Exercise may be the last thing you feel like doing when you’re struggling with fatigue and low energy, but movement is one of the best things you can do for your body—especially when dealing with thyroid imbalance. Regular exercise helps reduce inflammation, balance hormones, and boost your energy levels. The key is to listen to your body and start slowly, building up strength and stamina over time.
In The Zen and Zest Zone, we offer monthly workouts designed to support your thyroid and overall health. These workouts cater to all levels and abilities and focus on functional movement, strength-building, and stress reduction. Whether you’re new to exercise or have been working out for years, we’ll guide you through movements that promote healing, enhance circulation, and alleviate tension in the body.
Exercise has many benefits for the thyroid:
- Reduces Inflammation: Regular movement helps lower the chronic inflammation associated with autoimmune thyroid disease.
- Boosts Metabolism: Exercise helps balance your metabolism and regulate thyroid function.
- Improves Mood and Mental Clarity: Physical activity promotes the release of endorphins, which helps alleviate anxiety and improve cognitive function.
Our fitness workshops are designed to empower you to get moving in a way that feels right for your body, giving you the strength to tackle each day with more energy and confidence.
Stress Management: The Secret to Healing
Stress is one of the biggest triggers for autoimmune disease flare-ups. It can weaken your immune system, raise cortisol levels, and throw your hormones completely out of balance. Chronic stress exacerbates symptoms of autoimmune thyroid disease, leading to a vicious cycle of inflammation, fatigue, and discomfort.
You can take charge of your stress levels. By adding in stress-reducing practices to your daily routine, you’ll be able to break that cycle and support your body’s healing process.
At The Zen and Zest Zone, we teach a variety of stress management techniques that can make a huge difference in your thyroid health. From mindfulness practices to breathwork and relaxation exercises, we provide you with the tools to keep your nervous system calm and balanced. Some of the techniques we focus on include:
- Meditation: A simple meditation practice can reduce cortisol levels, improve mental clarity, and help you feel more centered.
- Vagus Nerve Stimulation: Techniques like different breathing patterns and gentle movement stimulate the vagus nerve, which is responsible for the body’s relaxation response.
- Mindfulness Practices: By being present in the moment and tuning into your body, you can reduce stress and connect with your body in a healing way.
By managing your stress effectively, you’ll not only feel more calm and centered but also create the optimal environment for your thyroid to thrive.
