Don’t do anything drastic or harsh if you have or suspect an autoimmune diagnosis! Read below to learn why!

It’s easy to think that a strong detox or cleanse is necessary to flush out your liver, especially with all of the many environmental toxins we’re exposed to today. But here’s the truth: you don’t need to do extreme detoxes or harsh cleanses to get your liver functioning optimally. AND, some cleanses can actually throw you into an autoimmune flare!

Why You Actually Do Need to Cleanse—But Gently

It’s true that our liver is naturally designed to detoxify 24/7, but modern life is full of challenges for the liver. The liver is bombarded by environmental toxins, chemicals in our food, pollutants in the air, contaminants in our water, and synthetics in our personal care products. We’re constantly exposed to man-made chemicals that didn’t even exist decades ago.

So while your liver works hard every day to filter and remove these toxins, the reality is that we’re exposed to a much higher toxic load than ever before. That’s why supporting your liver with a gentle, sustainable cleanse can make a huge difference in how you feel.

Signs You Need a Liver Cleanse

If your liver is struggling to keep up, you may start to notice some key signs, such as:

  • Bloating and digestive distress
  • Stubborn weight, especially around the belly
  • Hormonal imbalances (irregular periods, PMS, hot flashes)
  • Mood swings, irritability, or brain fog
  • Fatigue or trouble sleeping
  • Skin issues (acne, rashes, or dullness)
  • Bad breath or a coated tongue

These symptoms are your body’s way of signaling, “Hello! I could use some help over here!” Instead of turning to a harsh cleanse that may only stress your body more, focus on gentle, daily actions that naturally encourage detoxification.

How Does A Gentle Liver Cleanse Work?

A more sustainable and effective way to cleanse your liver is by removing things that don’t serve you and adding in daily tools and habits that support your liver’s natural detox pathways.

1. Elimination Diet

One of the best ways to support your liver is through an elimination diet. By cutting out common triggers like gluten, dairy, sugar, processed foods, and alcohol, you give your liver a break from processing inflammatory substances.

An elimination diet also helps identify any food sensitivities that could be straining your liver. When you remove these triggers, your liver can focus on detoxifying toxins, even stored toxins, instead of reacting to inflammatory foods.

2. Add Liver-Loving Foods

Start adding foods that support liver function and help with detoxification.

– Cruciferous veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, and kale

– Bitter greens like arugula, dandelion greens, and beets

– Artichokes, garlic, and turmeric, which help stimulate bile production and reduce inflammation

– Herbs like milk thistle and dandelion root that support liver health

3. Stay Hydrated

Water is essential for flushing out toxins. Aim for 1/2 your body weight in ounces of clean filtered water per day to help your liver and kidneys cleanse effectively.

4. Gentle Movement

Movement, especially light activities like walking or yoga, helps promote circulation and supports lymphatic drainage.

5. Minimize Exposure to Toxins

Make simple swaps to reduce your exposure to environmental toxins:

– Use natural cleaning products and avoid pesticides.

– Choose organic produce when possible.

– Switch to non-toxic personal care products, free from parabens and phthalates.

Adrenal Health and Cleansing: Go Low and Slow

If you’re dealing with adrenal dysfunction and/or an autoimmune condition, an aggressive cleanse can be too much for your body. Stress and adrenal fatigue can worsen during a drastic change and make you feel worse instead of better.

Go slow and listen to your body—a gentle approach to cleansing is far more sustainable and supportive in the long run. You AND your body need to feel safe the entire time.

A plan that includes nutrient-dense, whole foods and gradual detoxification methods will allow your body to adjust slowly and prevent overstressing your system. That’s why working with someone knowledgeable in both liver health and adrenal function is key.

Cleansing Too Quickly Can Trigger an Autoimmune Flare

When it comes to cleansing, especially for those dealing with autoimmune conditions, slow and steady wins the race. While it’s tempting to dive into a cleanse full-force, making sudden and drastic changes can actually backfire, triggering an autoimmune flare.

Your body is already in a sensitive state. When you have an autoimmune condition, if you introduce too many changes all at once—whether it’s cutting out a long list of foods, taking strong detox supplements, or doing an aggressive fast—it can overwhelm your system. Your body may struggle to keep up with the detoxification process which puts additional stress on your immune system.

1. Toxin Release Overload: As your liver works to detoxify, it releases stored toxins into your bloodstream for elimination. If you’re pushing too many toxins out at once, your body may not be able to process and eliminate them quickly enough. This can cause toxins to recirculate, which can lead to headaches, fatigue, skin rashes, and more.

2. Immune System Activation: A sudden flood of toxins can also activate your immune system. For someone with an autoimmune condition, this can be particularly problematic. When your immune system is already on high alert, a detox can send it into overdrive, triggering an autoimmune flare with symptoms like increased inflammation, joint pain, or worsening symptoms.

3. Adrenal Stress: Your adrenal glands are there for you in managing stress, and a sudden or intense cleanse can add stress to an already taxed system. When you have adrenal dysfunction, your body is less capable of handling the demands of a fast detox. This can worsen fatigue, mood swings, and even lead to adrenal crashes, which further compromises your immune response.

Why a Slow and Gentle Cleanse is Key

For anyone with autoimmune conditions, it’s essential to take a more gentle, sustainable approach to detoxing.

– Making small dietary changes over time rather than all at once

– Gradually introducing new supplements or detox tools like herbal teas or gentle liver support herbs (e.g., milk thistle, dandelion root)

– Allowing your body time to adjust to each change before adding something new

By giving your body time to adapt, you reduce the risk of overwhelming your immune system and triggering a flare. A slow, personalized cleanse plan also ensures that you’re supporting your liver without overstressing your adrenals or other systems in your body.

Knowing When to Back Off

It’s important to listen to your body throughout the cleanse process. If you start experiencing symptoms like increased fatigue, digestive discomfort, or mood swings, it might be a sign that you need to pull back and slow down. Cleansing should leave you feeling more energized and balanced, not worse.

This is why a personalized approach is so important. Everyone’s body responds differently to detoxing, and those with autoimmune conditions need extra care to avoid pushing their body too far.
