I remember how lonely I felt when I got my diagnosis. Being told you have an incurable illness—or any chronic condition—can feel scary and isolating. The moment you’re handed that diagnosis, it’s as if the world is spiraling out of control.
I was confused, frustrated, angry, and scared. Friends and family try to understand, but unless they’ve walked the same path, they just don’t get it. It’s easy to feel like no one really understands.
But here’s the truth: You are not alone.
There’s power in connection. When we come together, we lift each other up, celebrate breakthroughs, and provide hope for even the darkest days. Community is not just a nice-to-have; it’s essential for healing.
If you’re dealing with an autoimmune condition like thyroid disease, rheumatoid arthritis, or lupus, the path to recovery is never straightforward. It can feel overwhelming and exhausting, both physically and emotionally. But finding your people—a community of people who understand and support you—can completely change your healing journey.

Connection Is Key
Science backs up what many of us already feel in our hearts: human connection is the backbone of health. We saw this during the epidemic. Several people close to me became very depressed when they had to stay home and isolated from their friends. As an introvert, I was fine AND I still went out to work a few days a week, but my extrovert family members where miserable and getting worse every day.
Research has shown that being part of a supportive social environment improves mental health, longevity, and reduces the risk of mortality. The impact of strong social ties on health is as powerful as quitting smoking or maintaining a healthy weight.
For those of us with autoimmune conditions, this connection is especially important. Knowing we can talk to someone who has been there can help reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation while providing tools for handling the ups and downs of daily life.
One of the most significant benefits of connection is the sense of belonging. When we connect with people who understand our struggles, we no longer feel like we’re navigating this alone. Instead, we become part of a community where we’re supported, encouraged, and empowered to keep moving forward—even on the hardest days.
Emotional Resilience Through Community
Living with a chronic illness is not just physically challenging. Anxiety, depression, and feelings of hopelessness are common among some of us battling autoimmune conditions. These emotional struggles often stem from feelings of isolation and uncertainty that comes with long-term illness.
When we are part of a community, these emotional burdens can feel a little lighter. Being surrounded by people who truly understand my experience gives me comfort and reassurance that I’m not alone. It’s easier to maintain a positive outlook when you have a group of cheerleaders celebrating your wins and helping you find hope during setbacks.
Group support also encourages emotional resilience by giving us a sense of purpose. When we feel like we belong, it’s easier to focus on the positive aspects of what’s going on. This mindset shift can be transformative and help us approach healing with greater optimism and determination.

The Mental Benefits of Connection
Community has tangible benefits for cognitive and mental health as well. Engaging in group discussions, learning from others, and participating in shared activities keeps the brain active and sharp. This is important for those of us with autoimmune conditions, because chronic illness can often lead to brain fog and mental fatigue.
Studies show that maintaining strong social connections can reduce the risk of cognitive decline and improve overall brain health. When we’re part of a community, we’re more likely to engage in lifelong learning and new experiences which helps keep the brain firing optimally.
Connection can enhance problem-solving skills and boost creativity. Being exposed to different perspectives and ideas allows us to find better solutions to the challenges we face. This can be life-changing.
Healing Isn’t Just Physical
It’s easy to focus solely on the physical aspects of healing: medications, supplements, diets, and exercise routines. While these are all critical parts of our health journey, they’re only part of the picture.
True healing involves addressing the whole person—body, mind, and spirit. And one of the most powerful ways to nurture our emotional and spiritual well-being is through connection.
Being part of a supportive group offers unique benefits that no treatment plan can replicate.
- Daily Encouragement: Knowing there are people cheering me on can make even the smallest victories feel monumental.
- Shared Wisdom: In a community, we gain access to a wealth of knowledge and experience from others who have been there.
- Unconditional Support: On tough days, the encouragement of friends can be the nudge I need to keep going.
- A Safe Space to Be Vulnerable: There’s nothing more healing than being truly seen and heard by people who understand.
Why Perfectionism Could Be Blocking Healing
If you’ve been diagnosed with a chronic illness, you’ve probably felt the pressure to “do all the things and do everything right.” From meticulously following your diet to maintaining a flawless self-care routine, it’s easy to fall into the trap of perfectionism.
Striving for perfection can be exhausting—and counterproductive. Healing is not linear, and there will always be setbacks along the way.
Community feels safe. This is our safe zone to let go of those unrealistic expectations. It reminds us that we don’t have to do it all on our own, and that it’s okay to stumble. By sharing our struggles and successes with others, we learn to embrace imperfection and focus on progress not perfection.
Why Our Current Healthcare System Falls Short
In the U.S., the healthcare system neglects the emotional and social aspects of healing. Doctors are quick to prescribe medications and recommend treatments, but they rarely address the importance of community and connection.
As a result, many people with chronic illnesses feel isolated and unsupported. They’re left to navigate their journey on their own, without the tools or resources to connect with others who understand their experience.
The good news? You don’t have to wait for the system to catch up. By seeking out a community that understands and uplifts you, you can take control of your health and create a support network that meets your needs.
